This course provides an overview of the basic framework of the evolving and developing legal system of England and Wales, which reflects the history and geography of the United Kingdom as well as its politics. This course covers the nature and structure of law and the English legal system, the court system, legal personnel, regulation of the legal professions and the provision of legal services, the nature of the UK constitution, legislative power, executive power and judicial power, judicial review, and the protection of civil liberties, human rights and equality.
Who is this course for…
This course is written for non-lawyer professionals and support colleagues who work with chartered legal executives, solicitors and other legal professionals in law firms. Lawyers who have been away from the profession for a while, including on maternity or paternity leave, will also benefit from an update on how the legal system and professional context has changed during their absence.
Why is this course important…
Law firms and lawyers have a distinct business and professional culture which can make their non-legally qualified colleagues feel, in varying degrees, like outsiders. This culture is partly derived from the shared body of legal knowledge which all lawyers acquire during their legal studies. It also arises from the very distinctive professional and regulatory context in which private sector law firms operate. The relationship between a lawyer and their client also forms part of this context as does the terminology used by professional lawyers.
