Fellow of the Institute (FILFM)

The ILFM Fellowship (FILFM) is the Institute’s highest professional distinction, awarded to members who have demonstrated exceptional achievement and sustained commitment to excellence in legal finance and practice management. Reserved for experienced professionals who have already earned the ILFM Diploma - ILFM (Dip), the Fellowship offers a pathway to deepen expertise, broaden strategic insight, and contribute meaningfully to the advancement of the profession.

Fellowship Achievement Criteria

To have achieved the FILFM designation, candidates must completed:

  • CALFP and CFM (mandatory), plus
  • Either CTLPF or CLPM

Courses studied were up to an 18 month period for each certificate with a tutor marked assessment after each tutorial,  concluding with a 3-hour final examination for each certificate.

It is NOT possible to gain a Fellowship via APEL (Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning)

Certificate in Accounting for Legal Finance Professionals (CALFP)*

  • Understand the journey from ledger accounts to trial balance
  • Apply accounting frameworks for sole traders and partnerships
  • Perform adjustments including accruals, depreciation, and bad debts
  • Prepare and interpret partnership accounts
  • Navigate changes in partner structures and capital accounts
  • Explore financial reporting standards and limited company accounts
  • Understand auditing principles and financial statement analysis

Certificate in Financial Management (CFM)*

  • Analyse profitability and key performance indicators (KPIs)
  • Forecast budgets and calculate minimum fees
  • Manage working capital and cash flow
  • Produce management accounts and partner reports
  • Understand LLP structures and financial reporting

Certificate in Tax for Legal Finance Professionals (CTLFP)

  • Understand Income Tax, Employment Income, and Trading Income
  • Apply Capital Allowances and National Insurance Contributions
  • Navigate Stamp Duty, Capital Gains Tax, and Inheritance Tax
  • Explore Corporation Tax and VAT (two-part module)
  • Make informed recommendations based on UK tax principles

Certificate in Legal Practice Management (CLPM)

  • Understand the legal profession post-Legal Services Act 2007, including ABS and MDP structures
  • Apply professional conduct rules, outcome-focused regulation, and file management protocols
  • Enhance client care through service regulations, complaints handling, and cost transparency
  • Manage business operations: referrals, internal controls, auditing, and file reviews
  • Apply management principles: stakeholder engagement, appraisals, training, and performance
  • Lead teams: emotional intelligence, motivation, recognition, and team culture
  • Identify and manage risks: contingency planning, indemnity insurance, and data protection
  • Develop marketing strategies: branding, e-marketing, CSR, and website effectiveness
  • Conduct business analysis: SWOT, PESTEL, strategy, and managing change
  • Lead projects: stakeholder identification, project stages, and legal practice implementation

Post-Nominal Letters - Designatory Letters

Upon successful completion of the Fellowship qualification, candidates are entitled to use the prestigious post-nominal letters while maintaining current ILFM Membership:   FILFM - (Fellow of the Institute of Legal Finance & Management)

Full Members also have voting rights.
