Without fail World Mental Health Day #WMHD falls on the same day of the same month each year. If you’re not already aware, it’s 10th October!

The ILFM and LawCare – Legal Finance Professionals’ Mental Health Matters

Legal finance students going through their qualifications with us will have the knowledge that the ILFM membership (and most of our students are also members) advocates keeping up to date and in touch with the charity, LawCare.

LawCare works with several legal educators and professional bodies to…

“Improve the culture in law, to encourage healthy legal workplaces that support mental wellbeing and challenge the stigma that can make it hard for some to seek help”.

As the leading professional education body for legal finance and management professionals, we understand fully the pressures (and often isolation) involved in legal accountancy, including stiff regulations around SRA Accounts Rules and often being the target for cybercrime.

Celebrating Healthy Minds in Legal Finance and Practice Management

As World Mental Health Day falls on the 10th day of the 10th month here are 10 reasons why you might consider reaching out to this incredible mental health charity, LawCare, for anyone working in law; not just for the solicitors and fee earners.

Here’s is LawCare’s 10 Reasons to Get in Touch

  1. Everyone you'll speak to on the phone, email or online chat either works in, or has worked in the law. They completely understand life in the legal industry and all its challenges.
  2. LawCare service is completely confidential; you don’t even have to give your name.
  3. You can contact them about anything at all – from a bad day at work to something more serious.
  4. They offer one-to-one peer support for those who need a bit of extra support over a period of weeks or months.
  5. Support is for anyone working in the legal industry in the UK, Channel Islands, and Isle of Man.
  6. LawCare isn’t just for fee earners and lawyers, do let colleagues know that they are there for legal cashiers, compliance officers and practice manager too! All support staff in the legal industry will be making an impact on the business and should be looked after.
  7. They have 25 years’ experience in supporting the legal community and have helped over 10,000 legal professionals to date.
  8. In some circumstances they can provide funding for a single session therapy or a course of counselling with a counsellor or therapist.
  9. 98.5% of people who have used LawCare’s support service would recommend them to others.
  10. It’s completely free of charge to access LawCare’s support service.

We, as a profession, are known to have stiff upper lips, and just “get on with it”, or we are “too busy” to fit our own health (esp. minds) in for a service!

The Why – Non-Judgemental and Trust

Confidentiality and trust are key when it comes to any kind of counselling and listening, here is some lovely feedback from someone in law who needed non-judgmental help.

“I called LawCare when I was struggling with a heavy workload and an unsympathetic supervisor. Your service really helped by being there in a particularly hard moment, confirming that I was justified and offering practical advice. The service was far better than I expected, the person I spoke to took the perfect tone and I felt fully supported when I was at breaking point.”

LawCare’s volunteers are the same as any of us in this industry, and this is what one of them had to say to us,

“None of us are immune from personal situations with which we are unable to deal. LawCare volunteers bring professional and personal understanding and empathy and support. We can add value by listening and helping. We can and do make a difference."

Here at the ILFM, our Chief Executive, Tim Kidd, is firmly of the opinion that if he looks after his staff, they will thereafter look after its students and members. We also know that the analogy of the oxygen mask going on oneself first to be able to keep others breathing is something we heavily advocate as a team too.
